Please be aware before you get our hopes up on saving one of our rescues:
Our adoption fee for adult cats is $250 and $350 for all kittens less than 6 months of age. We are well aware that cats and kittens are available for adoption by many groups around $100 BUT we at IBR want our feline friends to have the benefits of what we have learned from our dog and puppy testing and will not scrimp on the vetting care on our cats and kittens. Because of the high cost of medical care given to these cats and kittens, our fee is not negotiable. ALL adult cats will have had a Complete Blood Count and Chemistry and IDEXX 371 tick panel (to look for antibodies for Ehrlichia, Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever infections) and will have started treatment for any positive infections. Cats will also have been tested for FIV/FIP, been tested and treated for intestinal parasites and will be vaccinated and microchipped. Because Illinois Birddog Rescue has discovered tick borne diseases in most of the cats and kittens we have tested (which is alarming) we are requiring adopters to do follow up testing and treatment if their adoptee was being treated previous to adoption. This is to ensure the health and well being and long life and future happiness of our cat/kitten and their adoptive family. Tick borne disease diagnosis and treatment in the veterinary and rescue community is non exhistant- we at IBR want to change that! Having lost my own cat to Lyme disease and veterinary ignorance, I don't want any of our babies to suffer at any time in their lives and live into their twenties if at all possible!
Any unaltered kittens adopted younger than 4 months old will need follow up testing prior to any spay or neuter at approximately 6 months old when antibodies for infection may show up. Due to Illinois Department of Agriculture regulations, a $50 refundable spay/neuter deposit will also be required at the time of adoption. ALL kittens will have had a Complete Blood Count and Chemistry. Kittens older than 3 months that have already testing positive for tick borne disease will have started treatment and will need follow up testing as well. Kittens will also have been tested for FIV/FIP, will have been tested and treated for intestinal parasites and will have their first vaccination. Microchip will accompany kitten for placement at time of spay/neuter.
We hope that the cats and kittens in the IBR program will not suffer the side affects of undiagnosed tick borne disease (kidney and liver disease, allergy issues adn digestive problems, thyroid issues, bladder infections, incontinence, cancer etc) and also hope our adopters appreciate the extra steps we are taking to make sure their new feline adoptee has a great start in life. Had I only tested my cat sooner like we have all the dogs and puppies in our program- he would still be with me. Lisa, IBR President
