Pointers --- Setters

Pointers

There are two types of English Pointers- Show Bred and Field Bred. The Show bred dogs are bigger in stature and being bred for the show ring, they are usually not as inclined to run too big off leash. The dogs we rescue are the Field bred types. They are usually smaller and have been bred and trained to hunt.

Pointers generally are quiet in the house- they can be couch potatoes and like to sleep in bed with their owners...They are not usually pacing around or needing your attention at every moment. Outdoors they DO like to take advantage of hunting for squirrels and pointing birdies. A fenced in yard is a must! Pointers also are quite trainable if you use food or praise or toys. Pointers LOVE squeaky toys and plushy toys although they can destroy them fast. Some of the Field bred dogs do like to play fetch too. Many dogs love to play keep away and are happy to be chased around the yard. The dogs are also quite affectionate and often times big kissers!

The Field bred dogs have been bred to run big off leash- so obedience training is a must. Children also have to be VERY careful with the doors!!! Many of my adopters do keep their dogs on leash, run with their dogs, or frequent safe fenced in dog parks. Most Pointers are very happy and playful around other dogs.
